Валерий Аркадьевич Алексеев родился 23 октября 1953 г. в Астрахани.
Учась в вечерней школе, работал судосборщиком. Служил в рядах Вооруженных сил СССР.
После окончания Исторического факультета Саратовского государственного университета защитил кандидатскую диссертацию, получив степень кандидата исторических наук.
В 1976—1981 гг. находился в Саратовской области на общественной и политической работе.С 1981 г. работал в Москве в руководящих молодежных организациях, в высших органах политической власти страны, в центральной печати. Защитил диссертацию на соискание ученой степени доктора философских наук в МГУ им. М.В.Ломоносова на тему ‛Проблемы государственно-церковных отношений в XX веке‛.
В 1991—1993 гг. занимался журналистской и научно-педагогической деятельностью. С 1994 г. преподает в МГУ, являясь профессором этого университета.
В 1994—2003 гг. работал Советником Председателя Государственной Думы Федерального Собрания Российской Федерации 1, 2, и 3 созывов, был Председателем парламентского Экспертно-консультативного Совета по свободе совести; одновременно являлся членом Комиссии по вопросам религиозных объединений при Правительстве Российской Федерации.
Автор многих научных и публицистических работ в отечественной и зарубежной прессе по проблемам религиозно-общественной жизни, государственно-церковных отношений, а также книг: ‛Иллюзии и догмы» (1991 г.), ‛Штурм небес отменяется?‛ (1992 г.), ‛Постперестройка: несвободная совесть?‛ (1992 г.), ‛Агония зла: конец мирового проекта‛ (1995 г.), ‛Жизнь человека: от купели до погоста‛ (1996 г.), ‛Тернистый путь к живому диалогу‛ (1999 г.), ‛Православная общественность в современном мире‛ (2006 г.) и др. Один из разработчиков фундаментального труда ‛Национальная доктрина России: проблемы и приоритеты‛ (РАУ-корпорация, 1994).
Является политическим Советником Межпарламентской Ассамблеи Православия с момента ее создания в 1993 г. в Афинах, где находится Штаб-квартира этой организации. Действительный член Императорского Православного Палестинского общества, входит в состав Комитета его почетных членов.
Возглавляет Международный общественный Фонд единства православных народов (МОФЕПН), созданный им в 1995 г. по благословению Святейшего Патриарха Московского и всея Руси Алексия II, возглавлявшего Попечительский Совет МОФЕПН в 1995—2008 гг. Ныне Попечительский Совет МОФЕПН возглавляет Патриарх Московский и всея Руси Кирилл.
В.А.Алексеев имеет большой опыт работы по укреплению всеправославного единства, участник многих крупных международных встреч на высшем уровне и межцерковных мероприятий на Балканах, в странах православного Востока, Восточной и Западной Европы, пользуется авторитетом у Предстоятелей Поместных Православных Церквей, глав государств православного мира.
В 1996 г. стал лауреатом Международной премии Андрея Первозванного в номинации ‛За веру и верность‛, в 2005 г. — лауреатом Международной премии имени Святых апостолов Кирилла и Мефодия Российского Славянского Фонда. В 2008 г. был удостоен Международной премии имени Святого брата Альберта (Польша) за вклад в возрождение религии в России и Польше. В 2009 г. стал лауреатом Международной премии имени князя Константина Острожского (Польша) за труды на ниве укрепления православной духовной культуры.
Награжден российскими государственными наградами: орденом Дружбы (2009 г.), медалью ордена ‛За заслуги перед Отечеством‛ II степени (2003 г.), Почетной грамотой Председателя Совета Федерации Федерального Собрания Российской Федерации, Почетной грамотой Государственной Думы РФ, медалью ‛В память 200-летия Минюста России‛, Памятным знаком МИД России ‛За вклад в международное сотрудничество‛, Почетным знаком Президента Республики Болгарии, Памятным знаком Премьер-министра Республики Беларусь и другими государственными и правительственными наградами и знаками отличия. За заслуги в области укрепления единства православных народов в 2005 г. удостоен Почетного знака Российского Фонда мира.
Имеет награды Русской Православной Церкви: ордена Святого благоверного князя Даниила Московского II и III степеней, Преподобного Сергия Радонежского II степени, Святого равноапостольного князя Владимира III степени, Святителя Иннокентия III степени, Преподобного Серафима Саровского II и III степеней.Награжден орденами Антиохийской, Американской, Болгарской, Сербской, Польской, Украинской Поместных Церквей, а также орденом Святых апостолов Кирилла и Мефодия двух степеней Автокефальной Поместной Православной Церкви Чешских земель и Словакии.
Женат. Имеет сына — Алексеева Дениса Валерьевича, кандидата философских наук, религиоведа и публициста, преподавателя МГУ им. М.В.Ломоносова, автора ряда художественных работ в российском кинематографе.

Valery Arkadievich Alexeev was born on the 23rd of October 1953 in Astrakhan.
While studying at the evening school he worked as a shipwright. Served in Soviet army.
After graduating from historical faculty of Saratov State University, he upheld the thesis and received degree of candidate of historical science.
In 1976-1981 he worked in Saratov region in social and political spheres.
Since 1981 he worked in Moscow, in leading youth organizations, highest county’s political authorities, central press. He upheld the philosophy doctoral dissertation in the M.V. Lomonosov Moscow State University, which was titled ‛The problems of state-church relationships in the XX century‛.
In 1991-1993 he practiced journalism and educational research activity. Starting from 1994, he lectures in MSU, being actual professor of this University.
In 1994-2003 was the advisor of the Chairman of State Duma of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation of 1, 2 and 3 convocations. He was the chairman of the parliamentary expert-consultative council on the freedom of conscience issue; and at the same time he was the member of the religious community commission affiliated to the government of Russian Federation.
Professor Alexeev is the author of numerous scientific and journalistic publications in Russian and foreign press on the problems of religious and social life, the relationships between the State and the Church.He is also the author of the books: ‛Illusions and dogmas‛ (1991), ‛Assault on the Heaven is cancelled?‛ (1992), ‛Post-Perestroika: constrained conscience?‛ (1992), ‛The Agony of the Evil: the end of the global project‛ (1995), ‛The life of a man. From the font to the churchyard‛ (1996), ‛Thorny way to the living dialogue‛ (1999), ‛Orthodox Christian community in contemporary world‛ (2006) and others. He is one of developers of the fundamental work ‛Russian national doctrine: problems and priorities‛ (RAY-corporation, 1994).
Professor Alexeev is the political advisor of the Inter-Parliamentary Assembly on Orthodoxy, starting from its foundation in 1993 in Athens, where its headquarters are situated. He is an actual member of Imperial Orthodox Palestine Society, and he is in the Committee of its honored members.
He heads of International Foundation for the Unity of Orthodox Christian Nations, which was founded by him in 1995 with the blessing of the Holy Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Alexy II, who was the Head of the Foundation’s Trustee Council in 1995-2008. Now the Foundation’s Trustee Council is headed by the Patriarch of Moscow and all Russia Kirill.
V.A. Alexeev has big experience in the strengthening of All-Orthodox unity; he participated in numerous high-level international meetings and parachurch undertakings in the Balkans, in the countries of Orthodox East, Eastern and Western Europe. He has prestige with the Primates of Local Orthodox Churches and Heads of the states of Orthodox world.
In 1996 he became the laureate of the international award of Andrei Pervozvanny (St Andrew the First-Called) for ‛For Faith and Loyalty‛; in 2005 professor Alexeev became the laureate the international award of Saint Apostles Cyril and Methodius by the Russian Slavic Foundation. In 2008 he was honored with the international award of Saint Brother Albert (Poland) for the contribution in the revival of the religion in Russia and Poland. In 2009 he became the laureate of the international award of prince Constantine Ostorjskiy (Poland) for the work on the field of the orthodox spiritual culture strengthening.
He was rewarded with Russian state prizes: Order of Friendship (2009); Medal of the Order of Merit for the Motherland, 2nd degree (2003); the honorary certificate of the Chairman of Council of Federation of the Federal Assembly of the Russian Federation; the honorary certificate of the Russian Federation State Duma; the Medal «In memory of the 200 anniversary of Ministry of Justice of Russia»; the badge of honor of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Russian Federation ‛For the contribution in international cooperation‛. He was also rewarded with the badge of the President of the Republic of Bulgaria, by the Honored badge of the Prime-Ministry of the Belarus Republic and by other state and governmental marks of distinction. In 2005 he was rewarded with the Honored badge of the Russian piece Foundation for his contribution in the strengthening of the unity of orthodox nations.
Professor Alexeev has awards of the Russian Orthodox Church, such as: Order of Saint blessed Prince Daniel of Moscow, 2nd and 3rd degrees; Order of the Reverend Saint Sergius of Radonezh, 2nd degree; Order of St. Prince Vladimir Equal-to-the-Apostles, 3rd degree; Order of St. Innocent, 3rd degree; Order of Reverend Seraphim of Sarov, 2nd and 3rd degree.
He was rewarded by the Orders of Antiochian, American, Bulgarian, Serbian, Polish, Ukrainian Local Churches, also by the Order of the Saint Apostles Cyril and Methodius, two degrees of the Orthodox Autocephalous Church of the Czech Lands and Slovakia.
Married, has a son – Alexeev Denis Valerievich, who is the candidate of science, theologian and publicist, lecturer of the Moscow State University named after M.V. Lomonosov, the author of art works in Russian cinematography.
